Anne in Motion!

Dear ASLF Supporter,

So many people from different walks of life come up to introduce themselves with a lovely story about Anne. It’s astounding how many people have Anne Saxelby in common! Some colleagues, friends, and acquaintances are just as you would imagine them to be. Others are not at all who you might expect, and I look at them and wonder how they shared a bond, and they look back at me and wonder the same thing! But that is a beautiful part about Anne, she attracted every type with her energy, charisma, decency in life, and passion to orchestrate a high quality local dairy trade in the Northeast!

Anne was an artist and collector and the treasures she compiled were just as diverse as the people she befriended. Her room growing up was a bric-a-brac masterpiece from ceiling to floor, front to back, inch to inch — an amalgamation of a thousand items from hubcaps to mailboxes, traffic signs to tins, empty bottles, album covers, dolls, antiques, and family heirlooms — and nothing looked out of place. Even though assembled over many years, the room was a perfect composed piece of art, and the last room dismantled before the house was sold — too much beautiful chaos to destroy.

During her time at NYU, Anne produced a series of paintings depicting diverse crowds. Two that hang from our walls show group meetings in public places on NY’s Lower East Side with ten to twenty people in a square, one person speaking and one character in the mix staring strikingly directly into the eyes of the viewer. The drawings forecast the chaotic community board meetings Anne was drawn to later in life where she fought for public markets and their vendors. There was a happy, purposeful momentum around Anne.

Anne was always in motion, as were the things around her, even down to the molecular level! She rode a bike everywhere. Anne was famous for involving friends to help her carry home something found, usually heavy, and then mount it into its place, tucked into her life-sized collage. Anne thought discussing space travel a waste of time, she cared more about the world she was in, and rescuing the finely crafted dresser at the end of the block. Once Anne put a piece of her own art out in the yard of her Cobble Hill apartment and it got picked up! Years later she saw it again, put back out for someone else to take home! Her art stayed around.

Anne loved rusty objects, which are themselves in a state of motion and transition. She grew a fascination for mushrooms, compost piles, fermentation, and especially cheese. To Anne, decomposing objects were in their prime. She once created a sculpture on her roof made up of discarded bread from the restaurant she worked at. When she was 16, Anne rescued a dumpster’s worth of blue tissue paper with her Dad that had been thrown into the crowd during a Blue Man Group performance — she brought her bounty home and glued much of it to the ceiling in her bedroom where it lasted for 22 years, although slightly browner towards the end.

After her death, the vast coalition of Anne, who participated in her many projects and adventures, rallied behind an idea to remember her.  But what exactly are we working towards? What is ASLF actually doing? We think about realizing a fitting legacy for such a great woman often, and we are striving for something resembling this…

  • ASLF impacting slow agriculture with extra hands — paid laborer/visionaries helping to overcome challenges and complete everyday farm tasks

  • ASLF making inroads for a cultural shift towards slow, quality agriculture as more young adults learn about the ingredients that feed us from sustainable-minded farmers, some of the most important teachers in the world

  • ASLF facilitating investments in our apprentice alumni to open businesses that make positive change and anchor communities, like Saxelby Cheesemongers

The work of ASLF happens everyday but the party to celebrate Anne takes place only one night a year! The date is September 13th and Chelsea Market has amazingly and generously given us access to their entire space, both floors from 9th to 10th avenues!

So many fantastic chefs and mixologists have committed to lend their talents to serve something imaginative and delicious — to honor Anne, they have launched the top food event in the world! The local food community consists of such good individuals to do this in Anne’s memory! The energy of the event last year was positively electric and it will surely be again. We hope you and all your friends will join us!

Special thanks to the vendors of Chelsea Market!!! Anne adored public markets, which is the primary way humankind shopped from the dawn of settled agriculture to the 20th century. Public market vendors represent a nod to our past but also groundbreaking innovation as they constantly find new ways for us to experience taste, flavor, epiphany, and pleasure right before our eyes, from the making of fresh noodles to the aging of cheese and the baking of bread.

The chef and artisan lineup with their menus can be found below!

Please come celebrate Anne with us!

Sincerely,
Patrick
