Stonewood Farm

Millbrook, NY

Stonewood Farm, a nonprofit farm, culinary and education space in the historic Hudson Valley, goes beyond traditional farming by embodying a mission that extends to community well-being and sustainability. Founded by Ken Holzberg and Tom Kopfensteiner, the farm transforms a 15-acre parcel into a thriving agricultural haven. Certified organic by both the USDA and the Real Organic Project, Stonewood Farm grows over 100 varieties of high-quality vegetables and herbs on 1.75 acres, emphasizing modern, thoughtful approaches to small-scale, sustainable agriculture. From The First Harvest Food Pantry to partnerships with local organizations, Stonewood Farm connects individuals from diverse backgrounds to sustainable farming and food justice. Stonewood Farm's dedication to fostering community connections, hosting events like the Annual Starter Plant Sale and Sunday Harvest Dinner series, makes it a center of sustainable agriculture and social responsibility in the Hudson Valley.

The apprentice will be working closely with Stonewood Farm’s culinary director, Kristen Essig, and will utilize farm produce to cook and bake for various initiatives, including food pantries, the food reclamation program, and Friday markets. Apprentices may also engage in light farm work and farm stand checkouts.

Through over five years of selective clearing and restoration, Stonewood Farm has cultivated an intimate understanding of the land's natural features, resulting in a farm and homestead harmoniously integrated with nature. The farm officially became a nonprofit organization in 2021. Characterized by carefully crafted vernacular structures, vintage materials, and a commitment to organic farming, Stonewood Farm is a unique blend of historical reverence, sustainable agriculture, and community engagement.

The farm annually donates 1,800 pounds of its 8,000-pound produce yield to local food kitchens, community pantries, and meals on wheels. The remainder of the produce is sold to pay for operational costs. Through partnerships with organizations like Lyall Community Church, Meals on Wheels, and Northeast Dutchess Immigrant Services, Stonewood Farm extends its impact, supporting food-insecure neighbors, including seniors and disabled children. Initiatives like the First Harvest Food Pantry, Dover Fresh Produce Program, and Full Heart Kitchen exemplify the farm's dedication to creating a more lively and inclusive community. The farm's outreach programs, annual Starter Plant Sale, Sunday Harvest Dinner series, and cooking classes contribute to building a resilient and connected community around the shared love for good food and agricultural sustainability.
