Avenue 33 Farm

Los Angeles, CA

Avenue 33 Farm is a 1.2-acre urban farm in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Avenue 33 focuses on regenerative soil practices and historical methods for farming on hillsides. They are building a system of agroforestry, in layers, to create a lush overstory of shade-providing trees that can protect and provide for diverse crops in the soil below and help create a holistic tiered ecosystem. This closed cycle provides enough nutrients to support over 50 varieties of vegetables and 15 varieties of fruits.

The apprentice will learn about growing a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and native Californian plants in an urban farm environment. Additionally, they will gain hands-on experience in composting, in-depth soil science, integrated pest management, sales and marketing, harvesting, and post-harvest processes.

In 2018, they started on a vacant hillside and within the next few years have been able to turn the land into a thriving ecosystem. Their produce is sold in their ½ acre educational space and farmstand within walking distance from the farm. In 2021, they were able to build their first “legitimately flat” space on the hillside, a new workstation to serve as a spot for planting and events.

Avenue 33 hosts workshops for middle and high schoolers as well as adults to further farming education in their neighborhood. In these workshops, they make salves, teas, teach composting, nursery maintenance, and general land stewardship.
